ATM Safety Tips.

Do your automated banking in a public, well-lit, open location.

  • Pay close attention to the ATM and its surroundings.
  • If the ATM is blocked or poorly lit, visit another ATM.
  • Don’t select an ATM at the corner of a building – corners create a blind spot.
  • Do not use an ATM that appears unusual looking or offers options with which you are not familiar.

Criminals are more likely to approach a person by themselves.

  • Take a friend with you – especially at night.
  • Park close to the ATM in a well-lighted area and lock your car.
  • If you use a drive-up ATM, make sure vehicle doors and windows are locked, and keep the engine running.
  • Have your card out and ready to use.

Stay alert to your surroundings.

  • Be wary of people trying to help you with ATM transactions.
  • Be aware of anyone sitting in a parked car nearby.
  • If you notice anything strange, cancel your transaction and leave.

Memorize your PIN; never write it on your card.

  • Do not allow people to look over your shoulder as you enter your PIN.
  • Shield the ATM keypad from onlookers; use your body as a shield if necessary.
  • Do not re-enter your PIN if the ATM eats your card – contact your bank.

Never count cash at the machine or in public.

  • Wait until you are in your car or another secure location.
  • Take your card and receipt with you.
  • Do not leave your receipt or throw it away near the ATM.

Stay alert after completing your transaction.

  • Make sure you are not being followed when leaving.
  • If you are, drive immediately to a police station, or to a crowded area.
  • Flash your lights and sound your horn to bring attention to your situation.

Sign up for electronic banking.

  • Closely monitor your bank statements and balances.
  • Immediately report any problems to your bank.

The National Consumers League has opened a toll-free number to provide information on ATM frauds and scams. The National Fraud Information Center at 1-800-876-7060 employs counselors who will refer consumers to the proper agency for reporting a fraud or scam.
